Feed Expanders

Feed Expenders were used in the late 1980s to improve the quality of pellet feed by adding large amounts of liquids and other materials without changing the final product.
Choosing the correct pre-treatment of feed compounds is crucial for the feed quality. High temperature and short time (HTST) conditioning is a process that is primarily used for the pre-treatment and conditioning of animal feed. The feed expander is similar to a single-shaft extruder, except that there is no die at the end. This device is able to produce more final product with less energy.

The advantages of expanded feed include:
  • Reducing feed moisture
  • Increasing flexibility in formulation
  • Improving the standard level of feed hygiene and mill efficiency
  • Increasing pellet mill capacity and die life

The place of the Feed Expander is usually after the conditioner and before the pellet mill, and in some cases, it is connected directly to the cooler based on the need and the formula without using the pellet mill.

ANDRITZ offers a range of feed expanders applicable for most feed applications. The feed expander improves the production process flow as well as the quality of the finished feed pellets.
The ANDRITZ feed expander is primarily used for mechanical/ thermal super conditioning, and stabilization of the feed mixture before pelletizing, but can also stand alone in connection with thermal treatment and crumbling of feed mixtures as well as individual raw materials.

ANDRITZ Feed Expander is the efficient solution for securing:
  • Increased addition of liquid, fat/oil, molasses to the feed mixture, without any negative influence on the pellet quality
  • Elimination of bacteria etc. by efficient heat treatment
  • Improves the activation of natural binding properties of raw material
  • Improves feed pellet quality
  • Lower percentage of fines
  • Works with all types of pellet mills
  • Optimizes the feed processing line
  • Better physical pellet quality
  • Increased pellet mill capacity
  • Reduction of growth-inhibiting substances
  • Better digestibility of the feed compound
